CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jerry Magee, Union-Tribune) - At 5 one morning, a visitor to the gym at the La Costa Resort and Spa became aware that a football player he would learn was Arman Shields was already there working out. The following morning at 5, Shields was visible at the same site, again pursuing his conditioning.

"I model myself after the greats. For instance, Jerry Rice," Shields would say. "He had a great work ethic. Everything I do, I want to do as he did."
