No. 10 Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Temple, 16-4

March 23, 2003

Box Score

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond senior Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) went 4-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Spiders to a 16-4 win, and a three-game series sweep, against Temple at Pitt Field. Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.), Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.), and A.J. Board (Raleigh, N.C.) ripped homers against the Owls. Richmond, 18-2 overall and 3-0 A-10, extended its home-win streak to 15 games with the three-game sweep. Temple falls to 0-3 A-10 and 2-13 overall.

Richmond scored in six of the eight innings, starting in the first. Chiaravalloti singled, scoring David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) for game's first tally. Following Chiaravalloti in the order, Galligan belted his third homer of the series to take a 3-0 lead.

Second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) added another run on a Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) double in the bottom of the second. After Temple responded with two runs in the third and one in the fourth, the Spiders added two in their half of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) touched home on a Reaver sacrifice fly. Chiaravalloti then cranked his second hit of the day to send in Zeskind.

In the fifth, Richmond increased the lead with a Tidball single that plated Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J.). The Spiders answered Temple's Al Roach run in the sixth, when Dolan and Chiaravalloti scored on a three-run home run by Fasano. Board followed with a homer down the left-field line, making the score 11-4 after six innings.

The Spiders added their final five runs in the eighth. Junior David Thomas (McLean, Va.) doubled into left-center, scoring LeNoir and Tidball. Galligan, Reaver and Thomas tallied runs on Owl errors.

Richmond southpaw Tim Rice (Brookfield, Conn.) earned his third win, striking out eight in 5.0 innings. Rice allowed four hits and two earned runs. Reliever Andy Givens (Bel Air, Md.) cemented the victory, fanning five while allowing two hits in 3.0 innings.

Temple starter Justin Mendek (0-1) took the loss. Rob Cucinotta and Jeff Roma recorded the Owls' only extra-base hits, both doubles.

Richmond returns to action on Tuesday, March 25 at George Mason. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
